Who Is Jormund the Elder?
By BTOB Studios · March 22, 2025
Of all the characters in Barow’s Tempus of Bellum, Jormund the Elder is the one we get asked about most. Who is he really? How old is he? What does he know that he isn’t saying?
What We Know For Certain
Jormund is the oldest living practitioner of rune magic in the known world. He taught the current generation of Order of Taryn rune scholars — and their parents’ generation before that. The records that mention him go back four centuries, and they always describe him as ‘the Elder.’ There is no record of him being young.
What He Knows About the Hammer
In Episode 3, Jormund tells Barow that the hammer has ‘passed through many hands.’ In Episode 5, he mentions Le’Sender’s workshop in passing, then changes the subject. In the comics, Arc Two, he is shown consulting a document written in a runic dialect that predates the current system by at least a thousand years.
He knows what the hammer costs. He has not told Barow. Every scene where Barow pushes him on this, Jormund deflects with wisdom that sounds complete but isn’t.
Our Theory
The prevailing fan theory — and one the writing team has not denied — is that Jormund was present at the Hammer’s forging. Not as a witness. As a participant. The cost he keeps referencing may not be abstract. It may be personal. It may already be paid.
We will find out in Season 2.
